Custom Dog Leash Holder + Giveaway!

I was provided with two free decals in exchange for this post from www.DarlingDecal.comĀ  however all opinions are my own.

Being a dog owner means having lots of STUFF! Especially stuff that needs to be easy to grab and go, like leashes, collars, treat bags and poop bag holders for walks and outings. I like to keep all these things by the front door but I needed something functional, but stylish, to go with our living room decor. I contacted the owner of Darling Decal Co. to help me with this project. We came up with a great stencil and D.I.Y project to solve my problem.

To do this project yourself you’ll need:

  • A decal from Darling Decal Co.
  • A 12 by 12 piece of plywood
  • wood stain
  • sand paper
  • hooks
  • a spare rag
  • picture hanging eyelets
  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Nails
pro-tip: You can get free wood from Lowe’s if you pick your plywood out of the scrap pile!

Step One

Prep the wood by sanding it. Make sure the surface is smooth. Then wipe it down with a damp towel. Make sure not to touch the side of the wood that you will be staining. You don’t want the oils in your hand to transfer into the wood, it will show when you stain the wood.

Step Two

Once the wood is dry from wiping it down, you can apply the first coat of stain. Use a rag you don’t mind tossing. Dip it in the stain and wipe it on with the grain of the wood. Wipe off any excess. Allow the first coat to dry according to the direction on your stain.

Step Three

After the first coat is dry, if you want a darker stain apply a second coat. Allow the stain to dry 6-8 hours or overnight.

Step Four

Once you’re finished with the stain it’s time to add the hooks. Lay out where you want your hooks and mark it with a pencil. I staggered mine so I could add all four. Use the drill to screw in the hooks. Do the same with the eyelets at the back of the plywood.

Step Five

Now you can finally add the stencil. Rub the paper side of the stencil with your nail or a credit card all over the stencil and slowly peel it away from the paper. Once you have the stencil off the paper and onto the plastic side, stick it where you want it on your wood and rub with your palm. Slowly pull the plastic away and you’re done!

The finished product came out really nice and helps keep all Bear’s stuff accessible but stylish at the same time. It cost under 20 dollars for me to make and was super simple to put together! I love working with Darling Decal Co. They will make anything you ask, for a great price and they have super cute designs! I love doing D.I.Y projects with their decals, it’s so easy!
